Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind... Romans 12:2
To Rule the Night
by Jason Ewert
The earth
Falls beneath our feet.
The heavens
Draw us up to their starry bosom.
Streaking through the sky,
Away from all we have ever known,
We are on our way
To another world, another time, another place.
Distant stars
Gleam in our windows,
Lit up
By the ferocious light of the sun.
Questions pulse through our minds,
Pounding through our veins.
What have we left behind?
What are we seeking?
Our destination
Wrenches us from the sky;
Darkness reigns
As we drop into the dust.
Uncertainty fills our minds,
Yet, we are tense with excitement.
We do not know what we have left.
We think we know what we are seeking.

Heavy stones
Fill our minds,
Geology is our soul.
Our friends
Send sonic letters:
Begging for lunar gems.
Man is god,
Science his savior,
And earth the omnipotent spirit.
The universe is a temple,
The moon its purest altar,
And we the popular sacrifice.

Mortal masters
Dictate our every breath.
They provide
Sustenance and comfort.
Materialism devours our hearts,
Gnosticism is the greatest folly.
Do we have souls?
Where are our oiling cans?
Mount Hadley
Stands motionless in the gray light.
We laugh,
Hollowly and without joy.
Happiness is commanded;
We give it, thoughtless of its significance.
Our journey nears its end:
We have satisfied the mortal gods.
Mindlessly working,
We prepare for the long journey home.
Silence reigns.
What is the use of speaking?
Do the heavens declare glory,
Or do we just imagine it?
Where would such glory come from?
What great mind placed this imagination in our minds?

Steadily invading the darkness
That covers our dry existence,
A great light illuminates our homes.
The light collides
With our frail houses,
And they are consumed.
A fiery hell
Unyieldingly approaches,
Forcing us to flee.
Shall we aim
For damnation's halls?
Is it wrong to admire them?

A memory
Of earth's death arrests us.
Its resurrection
Quiets our souls with awe.
Rising above our surface,
Bathing us in distant colors
Of blue, green, brown, and white,
A great salvation is proclaimed.
We return
To the land of the living dead.
Thousands flock
To worship us, the idols of science.
We are told that we have greatly aided man
And his search for significance and meaning.
Their eyes lack conviction.
Have they recognized their folly?
Darkness falls
While we gaze up at celestial jewels.
We bathe
In the moon's ethereal light.
Long ago a righteous man tried to justify himself,
But he could not move the stars.
What can we hope to accomplish
Except a greater failure?
* * * * * * * * * * *
The stars may fall from the sky,
The planets crumble into a million pieces.
Men will live and be forgotten,
Earth, their home, will weaken.
Glory lasts forever,
His light can never fail.
Holiness cannot be hidden,
He will always remain.
